CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

WELCOME2CAMELOT

MIDDY:

We looked across the road at the hotel on the far side. I’m saying ‘far side’ because the other side of the road really was far away. Six lanes of thundering traffic away. But soaring up over the fumes and noise was a cluster of brightly coloured towers and turrets. It looked like the castle on the Disney logo. A big sign outside flashed the words Welcome2Camelot.

When we looked back, Stars and Stripes had gone. She’d managed to disappear by cleverly getting rid of her conspicuous hat before diving back into the crowd.

It didn’t bother Nathan. ‘Camelot,’ he sighed. ‘I’ve always want to see Camelot! And now here we are.’

‘You do know,’ I said, ‘that that’s not the real Camelot?’

‘You say that about everything,’ he said. ‘You say magic isn’t real. But here we are. Exactly like in my dream.’

‘Oh, this is in your dream too?’ I said. ‘You didn’t mention that Camelot was in your dream.’

‘In my dream, we met Perplexion again. And now, in real life, he’s just across the road. Look.’

Nathan was pointing at the electronic sign outside the Camelot Casino Hotel. The writing had disappeared from the sign and been replaced with a big, glowing face, staring at us across the road. It was the face of Perplexion, and written underneath that face were the words Behold, Perplexion Is Here!

Sometimes it seems life itself goes, Ta-dah!
